Heather Brown is a fully accredited
practitioner with the British
Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP).
She is also an accredited member of Counsellors and
Psychotherapists in Primary Care (CPPC).
Heather has worked within the NHS for
30 years, having a nursing background. For more than
16 years she specialised in working with Breast Cancer,
and for 7 years worked as the Practice Counsellor
within a GP Surgery.
Heather says "although I have 'many
tools in my toolbox', I mostly work as a Gestalt therapist.
This is how I have managed my own life and it sits
very comfortably with me. When I have reached a cross-roads
or T-junction, then I have really had to sit down,
face the future and look at all the advantages and
disadvantages of each option (you soon find out what
you want when you start arguing with yourself!). Similarly,
when I've had a crisis in my life - bereavement, loss,
life-threatening illness, or divorce, I have learnt
that it is no use looking behind or backwards, but
to 'count your Blessings', to learn and to 'move forward'."
"Working with breast cancer helps
to focus one's life on what is really important and
assists in sorting out the priorities. Illness is
a great leveler and does bring home our own mortality
and reason for living. It is so important to make
the most of every day and to try and enjoy life."
"I am a firm believer in the adage
that 'one door closes, so another one opens'. It always
works, even if at times it is obscure."
"It is for these reasons that I
practice holistically - looking at all the facets
which make up the whole person. As Perls, the founder
of Gestalt says 'the whole is greater than the sum
of its parts'."
