Myofascial release and Trigger point therapy
Myofascial release is a form of bodywork which includes manual massage techniques for stretching and releasing restrictions in the fascia. Fascia is located between the skin and the underlying structure of muscle and bone and is a continuous web of connective tissue that covers and connects the muscles, organs and skeletal structures throughout the body.
Injuries, stress and poor posture can cause restrictions to the fascia and since the fascia is an interconnected web, the restrictions in one place, if left untreated, can spread to
other parts of the body causing further pain and restrictions.
Damage to the fascia can be likened to a stone hitting a car windscreen in that the initial stone will crack the windscreen and if not fixed, (like damage to the fascia) over a period of
time, the crack will start to spread and cause stress on other parts of the windscreen which eventually causes the car to be taken off the road whilst the screen is repaired.
Therapists use Myofascial release to manipulate the fascia to allow it to reorganise itself in a more functional fashion which in turn helps relieve pain.
